For legal translations, excellent knowledge of the language is not enough. Concepts relating to different legal systems have to be expressed clearly and consistently. This difference in legal frameworks means that the literal translation of the words on the page is not all that is needed; translators have to ensure that the concepts really “mean” the same in the two contexts concerned on a case by case basis. Translations therefore have to be commissioned from professionals who have the necessary knowledge and are able to deliver a text of real use to its intended recipient.
